December 15th, 2011 | DIY cupcake bath bombs

Well folks, today is national cupcake day! And what’s the only thing better than edible cupcakes? Cute little bath fizzies that look like cupcakes!

These are surprisingly easy to make, and a great gift idea! They were fairly cost effective to make as well, it worked out to be just under 2$ per bath bomb. Here’s what you’ll need:

♥ 1c citric acid
♥ 2c baking soda
♥ witch hazel (in a spray bottle)
♥ 1tsp olive or grapeseed oil
♥ fragrance
♥ colouring
♥ cupcake liners
♥ 1/4tsp cream of tartar
♥ 1lb icing sugar
♥ 3tbsp meringue powder

♥ In a large bowl, mix together the baking soda, citric acid and oil. Add a few drops of color and fragrance oil of your choice and mix by hand while spraying the mixture lightly with witch hazel. Keep in mind that water is what makes the bombs react, so try not to get them too wet.

♥ Once you’re happy with the mix, it’s time to fill the liners! If you don’t have silicon cupcake molds, use a bottle cap to hold the shape of the bottom of the liner. Pat the mixture in as much as you can.

♥ I then placed the cupcake bottoms then into a small cupcake tray until they hardened to help keep the shape

♥ You’ll need either an electric or hand mixer for this part. In a large mixing bowl mix together the sugar, meringue powder, and cream of tartar. Add color and fragrance oil if you’d like. Using a ziplock bag or icing bag and the icing tip of your choice, ice and decorate the cupcakes.

♥ Leave them out for at least 24 hours to harden before packaging.

Cutest bath bomb I’ve ever seen!  I saw the photo of this on instagram today and immediately wanted to make and try one of these beauties.  Such a sweet idea that I will surely be making.

I was really surprised at how easy these were to make! They didn’t take that much time either. The hardest part was finding somewhere that sold citric acid in my town. Bulk Barn won.

Your welcome! They made me really hungry and gave me cupcake cravings when I was making them hah!

adorable!! These would make a fantastic party favor for little girl’s birthday party (as long as no one eats them ;)

They really would be! The other day grandmother actually asked me to make some for her so that she could give them to her friends as hostess favours for when she visits/stays with them in their vacation homes.  I couldn’t believe I didn’t think of that idea on my own ;)!

They look good enough to eat. They kept making me hungry when I was making them hhaha!

Was it difficult to find those ingredients? They look and sound easy enough to make, but I’ve never shoppped for those ingredients so not sure how difficult it’ll be to find them!! Thanks!

No, not at all! All items you can get at a grocery or drug store. The only thing that may be hard to find is the Citric Acid because it’s not normally sold in bulk. I found it at Bulk Barn and it was sold in small containers, so I had to buy 3 of them. I’ve heard health food stores carry it, as well as most bulk food stores.
Fragrance oils you can get at craft stores, home stores, health food and bulk stores.Witch hazel you can get at any drugstore/pharmacy.

Cream of tartar can be found at bulk food stores or grocery stores.

Andddd finally Meringue powder can be bought at Michael’s craft stores (baking section) or any specialty food store. It’s typically used for baking cakes. You can also make your own  (there are recipes online for it,  it’s basically just egg whites in powdered form.)

Hope that was helpful!! Good luck :D!
